How to Measure Guide
(Wallpaper)
How to Measure Your Walls.
Getting an accurate measurement is the first step toward a flawless finish. Follow these steps to ensure you order exactly what you need.
1.
Measure the Width & Height
Using a metal tape measure (cloth tapes can stretch and be inaccurate):
Width: Measure each wall from corner to corner. If you are doing multiple walls, add the widths together.
Height: Measure from the top of the baseboard (skirting) to the ceiling. Measure in three different spots—left, middle, and right—and use the tallest measurement. Walls are rarely perfectly level!
2.
Don’t Subtract for Windows and Doors
It’s a common mistake to subtract the area of windows or doors. Professional Tip: Treat them as solid walls.
"Why? Because we need the extra paper to 'wrap' into the recesses or cut around the trim. Subtracting these areas often leads to running out of paper mid-job."
3.
Account for "Pattern Repeat"
Check the label of the wallpaper you like for the Pattern Repeat (usually in inches or cm).
No Repeat/Random Match: Very little waste.
Straight Match or Drop Match: These require extra paper to align the design across the seams. The larger the repeat, the more "waste" paper you will need to order.
4.
The 10–15% Safety Rule
Always add 10–15% extra for "wastage." This covers:
Trimming at the top and bottom.
Matching the pattern.
Having a spare roll in case a panel gets damaged in the future (dye lots change, so you want a spare from the same batch!).
Simple Calculation Table
Most standard wallpaper rolls are 20.5 inches (52cm) wide and 33 feet (10m) long.
Wall Height
8-foot ceilings
9 to 10-foot ceilings
Roll Coverage (Approx.)
Approx. 4 "drops" per roll
Approx. 3 "drops" per roll
Not a fan of math?
No problem! Send me your wall dimensions (Width x Height) and a link to the wallpaper you're looking at, and I’ll calculate the exact number of rolls for you.
